The term ‘Lecithin’ is derived from the Greek word lekithos, meaning egg yolk, wherein it was first discovered. Lecithin contains a mixture of phospholipids, nutrients that form part of the structure of all cell membranes in humans, animals and plants. Phospholipids are not only the building blocks of all cells but also perform vital functions in the transport and distribution of fats in the body.

Lecithin forms lipoproteins that work to reduce plasma cholesterol levels by lowering the harmful low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol and raising the high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol level thus protecting against atherosclerosis and heart disease. Lecithin contains phosphatidylcholine, a rich source of choline in the body. Controlled clinical trials conducted on humans show that choline is one of the best nutrients for the liver, improving liver function and increasing restoration of liver tissue. Lecithin can be used in the treatment of liver damage caused by alcoholism, other toxic chemicals, pharmaceutical drugs and viral infections. In fact, phosphatidylcholine can help to protect the liver from a wide range of toxic agents. Another phospholipid, phosphatidylserine (PS), is fast becoming known as the ‘remarkable brain cell nutrient’. Controlled clinical trials show that phosphatidlyserine is useful for improving memory, learning, concentration and behaviour including mood swings and coping with stress. PS has also proven helpful in reducing the effects of ageing on the brain.

Lecigran is a premium natural granular soybean lecithin, characterised by its high phosphatide concentration and low moisture content. Lecithin in granule form can be eaten pure or added to cereals, salads and milkshakes. It is ideal for those who cannot swallow capsules.
