Melrose Omega-3 Jelly Fish

Overview

Snack time can draw a battle line between what children really want to eat and what mothers know are smart snack choices. Parents worry about their children’s nutrition and try not to give in to their cravings. Over the past few years parents have been receiving information that fish and fish oil rich in Omega-3 fatty acids is good for their children. We now know that there are good fats and bad fats and consumers are aware of the good fats from fish (EPA and DHA). Fish Oil is rich in the Omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA, and it is now recognised that these essential fatty acids promote healthy brain development. The Nutrient Reference Values for Australia and New Zealand now make specific recommendations for EPA and DHA. Australian Dietary Guidelines advise eating one to two fish meals per week. They recognise fish is high in Omega 3 oils.

Many parents, however, find following these guidelines impossible. Many children simply do not like the taste of fish and won’t eat it. Parents are also concerned about small children swallowing fish bones.

Melrose has solved the problem for Australian families. Omega-3 Jelly Fish, our breakthrough new product, provides all the goodness of fish oil in a citrus-flavoured jelly lolly that children will love. There is No Fishy Taste. Two friendly Melrose Omega-3 Jelly Fish provide a minimum of 140mg of Omega 3 EPA and DHA, the two good fats essential for a child’s development. That’s about 400mg pure fish oil.

Melrose Jelly Fish are the healthy alternative to lollies and snack. You will find that most children find the citrus taste so appealing they will come back for more, and as well as tasting good, they provide essential omega 3 EPA and DHA which are often lacking in our modern diets.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is Omega-3 fats important for my child?

The role of long-chain omega-3 acids in the cerebral development of the foetus and the child is now well established. Premature babies require special care, as they cannot call on reserve adipose tissue. These reserves generally build up in the last three months of pregnancy and the brain content of the neonate increases 3 to 5 times during that period, then again by the same proportion in the first three months of life.

Omega-3 acids are essential to the cerebral developments of neonates, and an unbalanced supply can cause changes in visual functions.

It has been demonstrated that access to essential polyunsaturated fatty acids early in life is important for intellectual development during the first years, and that it can also have an impact on IQ, school abilities and academic performance up to the age of 18.

Children with attention problems are more likely to show symptoms of low omega-3 levels (e.g. dry skin, dry hair, excessive thirst) and have lower levels of omega-3 in their blood than children without problems.

There is some evidence that increasing omega-3 levels reduces the severity of behaviour problems, such as inattention, in some children. Some children with reading difficulties have shown major improvement in their reading after taking fish oil.

Children should increase their intake of fish omega-3 fatty acids by eating more fatty fish like salmon, trout, mackerel, tuna, sardines, and anchovies. An omega-3 food supplement for children is an option for children who do not like fish or who do not get enough in their diet. For normal development of intellectual capacity, vision and skills, a combination of the omega-3 fatty acids should be taken.

How have you eliminated the fishy taste?

New technologies have produced fish oil in an encapsulated powder form that can be added to snacks, confectionery, baby food and drinks. The technology also minimizes oxidation by enveloping microscopic droplets of fish oil inside Ocean Nutrition’s MEG-3® patent double shell.

Can my child overdose on the Jellies?

Although, we do not advise to eat the whole packet no harm will come from it. 2 Omega Jelly fish per day will provide a good amount EPA and DHA.
